Parent Letter Regarding Our New Charter

August 20, 2016

Dear Parents,

The renewal Charter petition for PCMS was approved by the Georgia State Board of Education on August 18, 2016. This renewal allows us to remain a Charter school until June 30, 2021, and has given us the following capabilities:

Innovations in governance, scheduling and curriculum; and

Faculty control over benchmarking, grading, pacing, and instructional material

Additional, specific benefits under the renewal Charter include:

  • Yearlong art class for HS credit
  • HS Physical Science credit for 8th grade STEM Academy students
  • HS Engineering credit for 8th grade STEM Academy students
  • ELL grouping based on ACCESS scores rather than academic grade level
  • HATponics – UN Build (Hydroponics, Aquaponics, and Terraponics farming methods)
  • STEM program for all grade levels

Waivers were granted which allow PCMS to:

  • Select the learning resources, including textbooks, which best suit the needs of our students;
  • Establish a uniform procedure for evaluating and communicating student progress;
  • Award high school credit for high school courses based on a combination of classroom performance and EOC Milestones performance without regard to minimum seat time hours; and
  • Establish any guidelines for qualification for high achiever classes (note: high achiever is a unique designation for DCSD and is not the same as gifted qualification--the guidelines for which are established by the state).

Although some benefits included within the Charter will not begin until August 2017, this new charter will give Peachtree Patriots opportunities not available at other middle schools in the district.

As required by state law, the PCMS Foundation, a 501-C-3 corporation, has become the governing board of PCMS. In collaboration with the Parent Teacher Charter Council (PTCC), the PCMS Foundation Board now has added responsibility to work with the District as outlined in the governance matrix of the charter petition.

The entire renewal charter petition along with appendices and exhibits can be found under the Foundation tab on the PCMS website.

Please note that the charter petition was submitted prior to the decision to modify the PCMS dress code for the 2016-17 school year. Therefore, although the petition includes the former PCMS dress code, the decision to follow the DCSD dress code is still in effect.

I hope this answers any and all questions regarding our status and benefits as a charter school.
